Why This Study Was Needed
The Chamber saw a clear need for a formal study of Honolulu Chinatown’s business environment for 2 main reasons.
- While recent improvements have helped, longstanding challenges still affect the district.
- Just as importantly, no comprehensive research had ever been done on Chinatown’s businesses and the issues they face.
This whitepaper provides a snapshot of where Chinatown stands today and a baseline for measuring future progress.
A follow-up study is planned in five years to assess what has changed, what goals have been achieved, and where the district is headed.
How It Was Done
We were fortunate to partner with students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, who spent six weeks in Chinatown conducting interviews, gathering data, and helping produce this whitepaper.
Who It Is Meant to Help
The findings, concerns, and proposed solutions in this report came directly from three key Chinatown stakeholder groups. The goal is to provide useful data, practical insight, and a stronger factual foundation for decision-making.
- Policy Makers
The whitepaper offers fact-based findings, including data not previously collected, to help inform public decisions and policy affecting Chinatown. - Business Community
The study captures a clear picture of business concerns, outlook, and priorities, helping owners better plan for the future. - Nonprofits
The report gives nonprofit organizations a clearer understanding of current needs in Chinatown and where their efforts can make the greatest impact.
